Island Life 101

General

The Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) is part of the U.S., but very far from the mainland! (Think: 20-25 hours of flying). The distance is part of the appeal for many medical professionals who relocate here, because it lends itself to a diverse population living near many wonderful spots to explore in Southeast Asia!

The three main islands are Saipan, Tinian, and Rota. Most jobs are based on Saipan.

FAQs

Is this a good place for families/kids?

Yes! The CNMI is a wonderful place for kids to disconnect and experience a simple life. There are multiple public and private schools on Saipan, and the prices for private schools and nannies is extremely reasonable when compared to the mainland.

Is this a good place for those nearing retirement?

Yes! The pace of the island, and medicine, is laid-back. There are many hobbies for people of all ages.

Can I bring my pet?

Yes (probably)! It is complicated, but I can help you figure that out.

Is there a lot of crime?

No! In general, the CNMI is a small and safe community.

How do I get there?

Depends on where you are coming from, but most likely multiple planes. For example, a common route from the east coast is: Newark —> Tokyo —> Saipan.

What is the tax situation?

It’s great. We pay taxes, but most of it gets refunded - so you make more bang for your buck here.

Is there Amazon one-day shipping?

No, that is literally logistically impossible. However, Amazon, Wal-mart etc. all ship many (but not all) items here.
